Today, in fast and crowded urban lifestyle, there are limited opportunities and spaces left to find such place. As a result, a specific space and environment was created to rejuvenate the five senses in a park called “Garden of Five Senses” in Delhi.
This Garden or Park is situated in New Delhi, India. This is known as “Garden of Five Senses” that helps rejuvenate our senses. This park is mostly used by foreigners, Indians and local tourists.
What is the “Garden of Five Senses”?
Garden of Five Senses is a park, a tourist place or a Para-natural outing space. This garden is designed to stimulate all five senses of a human being with its beauty and attractions and gives us a chance to touch, smell, hear and see the natural surroundings.
Why it is called Garden of Five Senses:
As we know that, we the human beings have been gifted with five powerful senses like sense of Smell, See, Touch, Hear and Taste. A walk in the Garden of Five Senses provides us an opportunity to use our five senses in a favorable environment which is quite rejuvenating. Therefore, this lovely park is called “Garden of Five Senses”.
History of Garden of Five Senses:
Garden of Five Senses took three years to complete. It was inaugurated and opened for public in February, 2003. This park was developed and maintained by Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC ), Delhi.
This park is built on partly rocky terrain of Aravali (an old mountain chain, left eroded now), spreading in 20 acres of land area. It was built at a cost of around 100 million Rupees. Pradeep Sachdeva was deputed as the main architect for the development of the project of Garden of Five Senses by Delhi government.
Main attraction of Garden of Five Senses:
This garden has been divided into distinct theme areas. The theme areas and the main attractions of “Garden of Five Senses” Delhi, are as follow:
- Khas Bagh (Special garden) is the most popular, modeled along the lines of the Mughal Gardens, is a lush green garden dotted with lovely flowers and having water channels. The water provides coolness and freshness to the environment. This Garden has around 200 varieties of flowering plants and shrubs.
- There are many tall and mature natural trees of different species including beautiful decorative palm trees and coconut tree.
- There are some dedicated parts in the park meant for colorful seasonal flowers with lovely smell and fantastic view.
- There are series of fountains which provide splendid view when lit up in the evening. Neel Bagh (Blue Garden Lake) contains a pool of water with lilies and ceramic chimes.
- Garden of Five Senses also has bamboo courts and solar energy park.
- You can find and see several murals and sculptures that are set up in the park, making it one of the largest collections of public art in India.
- Apart from other artistic sculptures, there are five black statues of women, representing five different seasons of a year e.g. Summer, Winter, Autumn, Rainy (Monsoon) and Spring.
- Garden of Five Senses has a tall Bell Tree made of metals, holding bells on tree looking like fruits, as a Modern Art Sculpture in Garden. Another tree replica made of metal with flower on top can be seen here.
- There is an area in the garden with “Kids in school” statues in white marbles, seating folded hand peacefully in prayer position. These sculptures of 35 children are carved individually. It is designed into 5 rows with 7 children in each row. There is a model of an open book in marble in front of seating children.
- There are 5 Stone Elephants in red sandstone, modeled on the line of Replica of the Mexican Maya Labna’ Arch at Garden of Five Senses. Big boulders of stone pieces are cut and carved, and are joined together to make an elephant. These stone elephants are placed in with fountains. In fact, elephants are the later addition to the Garden in 2013. This art was added as a goodwill gesture representing close bilateral relation between Mexico and India.
- Animals and free flying birds like pigeons, crows, parrot, and maynas can also be seen here. You can listen the chirping of these birds.
- There is an amphitheater with blocks of sandstone as seating arrangements.
- In a corner of Garden of Five Senses, you can find some food outlets to satisfy the fifth sense of the taste. As a tourist you can enjoy the food with family and friends amidst these lovely surroundings. In addition to this, there are some shopping courts as well.
- Every year, the Delhi Government, organizes Garden Tourism Festival, in the month of February.
- Apart from this, an exhibition area at the back of the garden hosts exhibitions and workshops from time to time, which adds a delight to tourists.
The Garden of Five Senses is a must visit place as a tourist. A walk though the garden can be quite rejuvenating and stimulating for the senses. If you are visiting Delhi City, I will suggest you to include “Garden of Five Senses” in your tour itinerary. This is a lovely spot to shoot pictures as well. It is quite spacious with open sky view.
- There are many places to visit and see in Delhi like Qutub Minar, India Gate and Jama Masjid.
A walk in the park can be quite fascinating, romantic and rejuvenating for you. There are stone tiled pathways in the garden leading to various part.
Visiting Garden of Five Senses in summer season is not comfortable, especially during hot noon time.
Garden of Five Senses is a happening place especially during daytime. The garden serves as one of the important cultural venues of Delhi. Cultural programs and different festivals are organized here from time to time round the year. Food festivals, different fairs (melas), dandiya festival including some cultural programs are worth mentioning.

There is a ticket counter at the gate providing entry tickets to Garden of Five Senses. As far as the entry charges are concerned, a nominal amount is required to pay (varies from time to time). There are separate charges for photography that may vary as per the features of a camera.
